History and Goals

The "International Ionian Sailing Week" is to be held for the 29th consecutive year, after its establishment in 1989. The organization's basic goal was and remains, on the one hand to develop the sport of Sailing in the broader region of the Ionian, and, on the other, to promote friendship between the region's Sailing Clubs and local societies.

The Patra Sailing Club, which was then taking its first steps, with a small number of sailing boats, along with the Sailing Club of Corfu, set the foundations, were and remain still today the main co-organizers of an organization that constitutes the main marine sports event of the Ionian region and is amongst the three most important Open Sea Sailing races in Greece.

In these 29 years of consecutive organizations, other Clubs from the Ionian Islands, such as the Sailing Club of Argostoli, the Sailing Club of Zante, the "Proodos" Sports Club of Ithaca, the Marine Sportsmen Club of Leukada, and the Sailing Club of Cephalonia-Ithaca have actively participated and helped promote the event.

Although it has not always been an easy feat, and has always demanded personal time and effort, its liveliness, high spirits, its love of the sea and of sailing as a way of life, formed the motives promoting the "International Ionian Sailing Week" to the high standards it has achieved today.

In its long-lasting course, this race, which alternatively starts from Patra or Corfu, has visited Leukada and Vasiliki, the ports Agrostoli, Lixouri, Aghia Efimia, Sami and Poros in Cephalonia, Ithaca, Zante, Mesolonghi, Astakos and even Pylos and Kalamata, Katakolo and Kyparisia, Kalamos and Meganisi, Ag. Pelagia and Kyllini in an effort that aims to support the sport all over the Ionian whilst presenting athletes with the opportunity to get to know these picturesque ports. The athletes participating in the races do not originate only from the local clubs. Athletes with a Pan-Hellenic and international status and distinctions, from the clubs of Piraeus and Attica in general, Chalkida, the Cyclades and even former Yugoslavia and Italy, as well as, at times, from Switzerland, England, France, the US, Russia and Bulgaria also take part.

Today, as it approaches its 29th organization, if we wanted to review its course, we would support that its main goal has been achieved. However, the Ionian is part of the vast seas of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean that do not belong exclusively to Greece, as other countries are washed by their waters.

Thus, our next goal is the development of friendships with the clubs of the countries beyond the Ionian. The next event sets sail for further afar. Sicily and Magna Grecia lie ahead.
